Pia Lindman Artist
Currently a recipient of a two-year grant from the Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland, Pia Lindman is a Finnish artist known for her interdisciplinary approach that seamlessly blends art, science, and social commentary. Her work often explores themes of human experience, perception, and the intricate relationships between individuals and their environments. Lindman employs various mediums, including video, installation, sound and performance art, to engage audiences and provoke thought.
Lindman investigates our connections with water as both a physical resource and a conceptual entity. Through immersive installations and public interventions, Lindman encourages viewers to reconsider their interactions with nature and the implications of water scarcity and climate change. Her work challenges the boundaries between art and activism, prompting urgent conversations about ecological sustainability and our collective responsibility toward the environment.

In 2024, Lindman exhibited in the Finnish Pavilion at the 60th Venice International Biennial of Art. In “Nose, Ears, Eyes“ (Sao Paulo Biennale, 2016) Lindman gave treatments to members of the audience and made paintings based on the visions she saw during these treatments. As Professor of Environmental Art at Aalto University from 2013 to 2018, Lindman initiated the art/science network Chill Survive focusing on the Arctic and organised the first global Radical Relevances Conference (2018). Since 2017, Lindman is doctoral candidate at the program of Nordic Cultures and Environmental Politics at Lapland University researching her concept of the subsensorial. A result of many years of investigation into the body and its place within the cultural space, Lindman's work now moves beyond the human body proper to multiple realms of organic and inorganic life. Residencies include with Stiftelsen Maaretta Jaukkuri Foundation on Lofoten, Norway, and with Slow Thinking Laboratory at Saari Manor, Finland. Recent exhibitions and artistic events include residency and exhibition with Bioart Society at SOLU space, Helsinki, installation and performances at KAI Art Center for Tallinn Photomonth 2020, Estonia, participation in "Not Without My Ghosts", exhibition with Hayward Gallery Tours, UK, and several contributions to the event series and catalog Rehearsing Hospitalities, Frame fund for Contemporary Art, Finland. Up-coming is "Code Chants" an essay on voice as force and Manaus in "Slow Technology Reader", ed. Carolyn F. Strauss, Valiz Books and Cultural Projects, 2025.
